To Bone Or Not? What’s The Big Deal?

Okay, so everyone is talking about it; some even making huge claims about the near-miraculous benefits associated with taking copious amounts of “bone broth” and incorporating it into your daily nutrition plan.

So what is it? What’s the big deal?

For those wanting a few more specifics,  the Mayo Clinic definition  or term for bone broth is, that it is essentially stock derived from roasted bones (typically,  beef or chicken) which may or may not still have some meat attached. They are then cooked for 24 hours or more with the goal being to extract the gelatin from the bones as well as release the nutritious minerals contained within the bones. The final step in the preparation process is to strain the broth (and season to taste) from the bones and then season to taste.

I don’t know about you, but spicy chicken soup, pepper soup, and broths have been a mainstay in my family for years! Not only that, traditional Nigerian pepper soup (in all it’s regional iterations) has been a cure-all for everything from recovery from malaria to the common cold! Is the science to back it up? the jury is still out on that although there are a few studies out there that seem to suggest that there are “some” medicinal benefits to consuming bone broth.

Will I be stepping out to my fave health food store to buy some bone broth or bone broth supplements? Nope! Especially when I have all the “traditional” ingredients, spices, and secret stashes (available at African food stores only, lol), in my own pantry-Boomsie! If there are any real “medicinal” properties, they lay in the spices themselves; everything from turmeric (a natural anti-inflammatory), curry (also contains turmeric), and nutmeg, to garlic, and so forth.
If you really want to detox  YOUR body, start with detoxing your pantry!  After all, if your pantry is loaded with toxic crap, so will YOU be TOO!

You, your food and…

Your food and you!…

So it’s a new day, a new season, and with all of that comes a whole new set challenges. The fall season kicks off the hustle and bustle of preparing for upcoming holidays and the stress of all those unwelcome bills that come with multiple gift buying, household preparations, and travel expenses. So how do you STILL fit in a healthy eating and fitness plan? Well, you simply stick to the P.L.A.N. and remain focused on your goals (i.e. living a balanced and healthy lifestyle, etc).

wp-1477510701784.jpg

I’m not saying there are no challenges in maintaining your health and fitness goals, but it is more than possible to be aware of what you’re eating, finding and using your “me” time to work out (it’s also an excellent way to deal with stress), and staying balanced in all (or most) areas of your life. Experience has taught me that the best way to do this, is by taking a step back and finding joy in the little things-a crisp sunny Fall day, an invigorating walk along the trails, or simply enjoying a hot cup of tea or coffee on the front porch (backyard, on the veranda, in front of your balcony, etc).

For the everyday woman who’s life is at the crossroads and who feels like she needs not just her health and fitness in balance, but life in general, I say, WELCOME! I have found that every woman is unique in terms of her story and her needs, especially at the “crossroads”. Why? The answer is relatively simple. The needs of a woman who is already stressed, out of balance both physically and mentally (i.e. overweight, frustrated, overwhelmed) is different from one who has her career, obligations, and family on track, etc but just needs “some” help losing a few pounds and leaning how to eat healthy!

The sad truth is that most of us women (especially if you haven’t seen 30 in a min😜) struggle with a chaotic and unhealthy life, but rather than valuing ourselves enough to change it, we choose for one reason or another, to stay on that hamster wheel going no where!

We need to admit and own our truth when it comes to our relationship with food and by extension ,  how we relate and perceive ourselves as well as others. we seem to be ignorant of the fact that FOOD plays an important role in our lives and an important aspect of culture. I guess like so many other things in this high-tech age, this is just one more thing that has become lost in the matrix of ” sameness” perpetuated by a media that serves itself rather than the welfare of society at large.

I’m not saying we bear no responsibility in own health, but I AM saying is that, the media bares some responsibility in terms of pushing “unhealthy” images and ideals of what constitutes beauty, a “healthy weight”, “healthy” foods (i.e. so called fat-free, zero calorie) etc. Our current mainstream media has in large part become the mouth piece of big Agra-business and corporations more interested in their bottomless than the wellbeing of society.

This is why I do what I do! I decided to get active and advocate for women’s health and to empower other women to fight back and reclaim their health, fitness. My goal is for women in my zone of influence to become knowledgeable about their food sources and equip them with the necessary tools to gain control of their health and nutrition. I’ll always remember these  wise words of my mom, “knowledge is power” and “the gates of the school-house are still open”!

If You are tired of UN-healthy crap being packaged and marketed to you as healthy, “low” in fat, etc, then get involved and educated about who controls your food- you are what you eat folks! The hard truth is that, if after all that hard work of getting fit and adopting a healthy lifestyle you’re still depending on big Agra-business and the fast food / packaged food industrial machine to give you good (derived from sustainably grown, mostly pesticide free or organic) quality food, dream on. An educated public is an empowered one, and too often that empowerment is in conflict with the bottom line of these corporations.

So what do I do to cut out the crazy and NOT break the bank? I keep it simple. Stick to mostly seasonal produce, buy my produce from local farms, buy organic where necessary (avoid the “dirty dozen”) and get involved in a local or community farm if at all possible. At the end of the day you, and your family are worth the time and effort, believe me! On a side note, my yummy red shrimp pasta dish 👇🏽 did NOT break the bank, contains mostly organic ingredients, and was both healthy and nutritious! #BoomShakaLaka 😜

Sunday free for all!…

Working on the weekends is soo NOT my favorite thing to do especially when the sun is calling, the temperature is rising, and…need I say more? It’s not that I mind per se, it’s just that summer is my hands down, shake your booty to the summer sounds, FAVORITE season!😎🎋☀️ Why? It’s because summer means life, adventure, connecting with nature and other people, UHH! It’s so hard to explain, but I just love it, ha haha.

Speaking of seasons, THIS is a brand new one and it’s time to reflect, decide, plan and ACT on all those good things I’ve been ‘planning” to do since the beginning of the year; HA HA! I don’t know about you, but if I stop MOVING, I STOP DOING and that my fellow travelers, IS NOT GONNA BE MY STORY! I’m just saying, it took me a while to get my groove back (mind, body, spirit) and I KNOW how HARD that struggle can be along the fitness journey. Think about it; I went from having my health and fitness in the dumps, being terribly insecure, having body image issues, etc, to where I am NOW and finally enjoying this “colorful” adventure.⚒👣

That’s not  to say I’ve hit everything on my list of to-dos, it just means that I’m in it to win it, get ready to fuel up for the next ride and GO, go, go! I KNOW I have a purpose and passion here on this “terra fIrma” and I am equal to the task! What about you? Still sitting on life’s sidelines? Hoping for a clue to help you regain your own personal power? Reclaim YOUR BODY and FITNESS? Contrary to what you may have seen on the Sci-fi channel, reality tv, and the like, there is no magical “A HAH” moment or chanting involved in CHANGING YOUR life.😜👁💡n

That’s right, the Stars will not realign themselves for your benefit, nor will the universe alter it’s current path of expansion; the ONLY thing you need to know is, YOU     Have to ACT. There you have it, the big hairy monster in the closet-FEAR of the unknown, of stepping outside the comfort zone, coloring outside of the lines! WOW! Ain’t it glorious though? Didn’t know you had it in you; huh? Boomsies on the journey2 y’all!…👣

If it don’t apply, let it fly!…

Yes, yes, yes and YES! I was listening to some positive words of wisdom from a wise soul at work the other day, and at the end of all her musings, she said “if it don’t apply, let it fly”, in reference to negativity, unproductive criticism, and all those “things” or “people” who want to “help” us kill our dreams before we even have a chance to make our own calculations.

Wow, I do believe I’ve seen that movie! “No, no, you’ve gotta stick to what you know”,”are you still trying to lose some weight dear?”, “your standards are just too unreasonable”, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”, “don’t quit your day job” ( to start your own business and follow your dreams) and Blah, blah, blah, BLAH! Been there, done it, AND NOT going back down that rabbit hole. It always seems like all the negative ninnys seem to appear in droves whenever you feel like you’ve finally hit that jump off point; where  you’ve gained the strength to take the risk to change and better your life.

My take away from that convo? don’t let your situation, negative criticism (yes, there is a difference between productive criticism vs. the other stuff), or other people’s vision of YOUR potential future, hinder you. If you’re serious about getting fit and healthy, then take ACTION and block out anything or anyone who’s telling you that you’re not being realistic. If that were true, NO one would take a reality tv star as a REAL candidate for president; just saying! Enough about that and back to the issue at hand. This journey has taken me to some interesting and uncomfortable places in my life, but I don’t regret any of it because I’m in a much better place physically not to speak of my mental and emotional health.

All that being said, you do have to be honest with yourself and face the facts about your situation, NOT wallow in them! Once you’ve done that, make a plan, plot your course, and stick to it. Now for the really hard stuff, haha ha…

With both hands…

With both hands…

It’s been another crazy week full of ups and downs, but I’m NOT letting that stop me; nor should you.💪👊 I had to remind myself today that yesterday  was yesterday, and today is A NEW day!
With this realization came the thoughts of that enormous list of things that I have yet to complete-yeah life’s B.I.T.C.H sometimes and the only way to get past those struggles is T.H.R.O.U.G.H.👊 So yesterday gave myself a pass and a kick in the rear today, and you know what? I FEEL FREAKING AWESOME! 😉

😤💪🌞 It’s not because I totally conquered every fear and self-doubt; it’s because I literally pushed through all of that and GOT SOMETHING DONE. That something was powering through a kick ass workout (I’m totally in love with beach body’s hammer & chisel workout 😤) that forced me to face what was right in front of me!
Sometimes to get through a difficult or challenging point in your life, you have to just PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER!👣 Bottom line is, change, improvement, and growth WILL NEVER be comfortable or easy.

What is perfection?…

What is perfection?…

I took some time the other day to “catalog” all my “imperfections” (yeah, you know the ones you see and can’t see, *wink and sigh*) and it was a bummer! Really what sane individual does that? Well, we women do of course! DUH! Every day we allow others to define perfection for us; for society, media and “tradition to tell us, “if you want to be perfect, to need to be or do…”.

Witness ALL the magazine (and other print and digital media) categories of perfection, societal references, practices and “code” words (i.e. slim, plus size, thick, fair, ethnic, etc) and the infinite list of other such descriptions, and that’s ENOUGH to let ANY woman know that she is a slave to others. That is, until SHE comes into the knowledge of SELF, HER worth in the universe, and HER place in it!

All the diets, and yes “procedures” in the world WON’T and CAN’T change the perspective of an enslaved, unawakened, or uninformed mind and spirit. Neither will spending 3 plus hours at the gym or starving yourself in to a size “0”! In the words of the Borg Collective (yes, I’m making a reference to the Borg from Star Trek MG because I’m an unashamed Trekkie, deal with it! He hehe), “resistance is futile”. The hard truth is that with the such fluid and subjective standards, it’s literally insane that we women even try to live up to this crap!
image

Needless to say, it’s exhaustive, toxic and cruel and has been designed to both limit and “keep” us in our place. I’m not even going to try to make the claim that this is a conscious effort by men or society in general (although it may have at some point in time, and has been conditioned and made more complex through the machinations of culture and other factors, etc). All that DRAMA? I’m over it! It took me a while to see it and I must confess that im still on the journey to self-discovery and empowerment, but OH WHAT A RIDE, Boom Shaka Laka, BOOOM!

Other than a real desire to be healthy and fit ( it was actually a necessity if I wanted to actually live longer and stronger ), I embarked on this journey because I recognized that being fit and healthy on the OUTSIDE requires that I ALSO be “WHOLE” on the inside. The irony? Getting PHYSICALLY fit is actually a lot easier than internal stuff, ha! My take away? Damn, I’m SOO WORTH IT! The question you’ve gotta ask yourself is, ARE YOU? Boomsies and get on the journey to fitness, health, and wholeness…👣

When the defecation hits the oscillator! …

When the defecation hits the oscillator! …

Yep it’s been a “min” since my last post, buuut let me just say, when things go all kinds of crazy sometimes you have to just L.E.T. I.T. G.O.👊 It’s been a busy couple of days full of mishaps, work, physical setbacks and today? Well, let’s just say that I’m not a violent person or else the heifer who side swiped my car would be missing a few teeth 😬👊

Yeah I know it’s not the adult response but dang it! There are people and forces that can really get you riled up and off balance-distract you from your goal! As I sit here ranting away, I’m so ticked off about it all and yet, I’m also shouting out loud that this has just “MOTIVATED” me to not let all those negative forces divert me from my prize! That prize is SUCCESS- Success in my health and fitness, success in my business, and just being the positive and gifted person I’ve been called to be!😉😜 Next stop, putting ALL of that into action…BOOM SHAKA LAKA!!

P.s. Happy Friday and don’t let the NEGATIVE keep you from embracing the POSITIVE and all the power that comes with it! Get Fit and Fabulous this beautiful weekend in the sun…😎🌞

FIT Tuesday…

FIT Tuesday…

Another day has come and gone  but Tuesday is still going strong, ha haha! Yes I worked up a sweat >>hammering and chiseling<< my way to being fit and ooh so much stronger than I was yesterday!  I guess you could say I’m just a “bit” EXCITED when I look back over the last six months and say to myself “you’ve come a long way baby”!
image

Getting fit, healthy AND STAYING that way MUST be maintained;  you don’t just work to get there and then expect to magically stay that way! Ha ha, DUH! Good luck with that fantasy! 😦 😉

What’s your yardstick for measuring healthy? I hope it’s not “skinny” because frankly, there’re A LOT of UNHEALTHY skinny people poping up all over the Internet! A distorted body image is a great way to end up unhealthy and possibly lose your life! Eating healthy, having a great exercise and accountability regime IS THE BEST thing you can do for yourself! 😉

Remember, there’s no shame in admitting you NEED TO change your lifestyle; it doesn’t matter where you start, JUST DO IT ALREADY! !!

P.s. I’m currently huffing my way through team Beachbody’s Hammer and Chisel workout regime with Segei and Autumn C….No pain, no gain! Ha haha…good pain, good pain *wink* 😂😂💪

Nature Girl!

Nature Girl!

Yay for Saturday nature day!! I love the sunshine and all that it signifies-life, renewal, vision and direction. That’s what I think of when I see the sun light streaming in through my windows and for me, that’s hope finding it’s way to me and guiding me on my journey. A little corny but, that’s how I feel about it so there ! *sticking out tongue* 😀

I’m thinking farmers markets setting up shop, tulips stretching out their leaves as their petals unfurl, yeah, yeah, that’s right I’m feeling a little poetic so sue me….these are just some of the things that come to my mind when I think of Spring and later, Summer.

wp-1461008095953.jpg

I get really energized, especially for my workout mindset, when the sun is shinning and there’s a balmy breeze blowing in through the balcony doors; awesome. RIGHT?! Who can’t visualize the magic of a beautiful day filled with the sights and sounds of nature even as you add your own tone to that sacred melody, just, WOOOW! I’m grateful for fellow fitness sojourners teaming up with me for a brisk hike at the Indiana dunes and forward unto….the next adventure!👋🏽😂🌻👣wp-1461008071326.jpg

Your universe…create your space!

Your universe…create your space!

So yesterday I decided to take a nature walk after a muscle burning kick-ass workout and IT WAS GOOD! Yep, I did it and I can honestly say there’s nothing like the sense of accomplishment and pride you feel when you’ve pushed through and come out on the other side.

For me it was a big deal because this same time last year, I literally could NOT work up the energy, lung capacity and courage to do what I’ve done! I said to myself,  “REALLY?” “Are you really just gonna stay this way?” “Over weight, UNhappy, FEARful, and boxed in?”

Nuh Uh! I soo was not going out that way! Next comes a coworker and friend who supported me and got me started with an awesome program and a wonderful group of ladies, each with their own struggles and journeys,  BUT UNITED in staying the course of getting healthy, fit, and empowered! BOOMSIES!! YAY, YAY! *backsliding like Micheal Jackson now* Hall haha, OMG, what a freaking journey it’s been but it ain’t over yet.

Now I’M  a fitness coach (shout out to my Beachbody buddies) and I’m humbled and empowered with the knowledge that I’m doing for others what was done for me AND I’M making money doing it! Can someone say, AWESOME!! and KACHING!!!  No its NOT ALL about the money, but it’s really nice to get paid for doing something you’re passionate about; especially in a world where so many people are suffering from poor health and nutrition.

All in all, Tuesday was a beautiful and hope filled day full of the sights, sounds, and yes, “smells” of nature. Getting outside and into the outdoors is a balm for my soul and there’s nothing like it. Maybe it’s  something about the physical action of engaging with nature that makes you connect and define your place within IT-YOUR UNIVERSE!

Here’s MY JOURNEY and “say hello to my lil’ friend” ha, haha (love my AL Pacino movie lines, *wink*) as i share a small slice my outdoor therapy what about YOUR JOURNEY? If you haven’t started yours, feel free to join me on mine … 😉
